Getting ready for Making Tax Digital (MTD)

MTD will apply to the Self-Employed and Landlords.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment is HMRC’s new requirement for self-employed individuals and landlords to keep digital records and submit tax information quarterly using approved software.

From April 2026, if your combined income from self-employment and property exceeds £50,000, you must follow MTD rules. Those earning over £30,000 will join from April 2027. Instead of filing a single annual tax return, you’ll submit:

  • Quarterly updates of income and expenses
  • An End of Period Statement
  • A Final Declaration to confirm overall income and allowances

The current regulations do not cover partnerships; MTD income tax is expected to be extended to partnerships in the future, but no date has been announced.
